SpaceX is a private American aerospace manufacturer and space transport services company founded in 2002 by Elon Musk. The company has developed the Falcon 1 and Falcon 9 launch vehicles, both designed to be reusable. SpaceX also manufactures the Dragon spacecraft, which is flown into orbit by the Falcon 9 launch vehicle to supply the International Space Station (ISS) with cargo, and bring back cargo to Earth.

SpaceX’s first launch: Falcon 1 Flight 4 carrying RazakSAT On March 2006, SpaceX’s first launch took place from Omelek Island in the Kwajalein Atoll. The rocket was named Falcon 1 and it carried RazakSAT, a Malaysian remote-sensing satellite.

The rocket reached an altitude of 700km before burning up on reentry. This was SpaceX’s first success after three failed launches. In December 2008, SpaceX launched its second successful rocket called Falcon 9.

This time carrying payloads for NASA including the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) and two smaller craft called LCROSS which were sent to search for water on the moon.
